The best POS system for a small UAE shop issues VAT tax invoices with your TRN, keeps billing when the internet drops, tracks stock per branch, and fits your budget. Most cost AED 0 to 160 a month, plus hardware. If you also sell on Instagram, WhatsApp or a website, pick one that shares stock with them.

This guide explains what a POS system is, what it costs in the UAE, what the law requires on your receipts, and how six popular options compare for retail shops.

Prices were checked on 29 October 2026 on each company's own pricing page. They change often; confirm before you buy. Disclosure: we make Nodi, one of the systems compared. We've listed the others fairly, including where they're the better choice.

What is a POS system?

A POS (point of sale) system is the software and hardware a shop uses to sell at the counter: it scans products, calculates the total and VAT, takes payment, prints a receipt and updates stock. A modern cloud POS runs in a browser or app on a tablet, phone or PC and saves your data online, so you can check sales and stock from anywhere.

A POS usually has three parts:

Part

What it does

Typical examples

Software

Billing, receipts, stock, staff, reports

The POS app or web system

Hardware

The devices at the counter

Tablet or PC, barcode scanner, receipt printer, cash drawer

Payments

Taking card and digital payments

A card terminal (POS machine) from your bank or a payment company

POS system vs POS machine: in the UAE, "POS machine" often means the card payment terminal you get from a bank or payment provider. A POS system is the software that runs your counter. Many shops use both: the system for billing and stock, the machine for card payments.

What should a POS system do for a UAE shop?

Check these before you compare prices:

  1. UAE VAT tax invoices. Receipts must show the words "Tax Invoice", your TRN, an invoice number, the date and the 5% VAT. (Details below.)

  2. Offline billing. Internet drops happen. The POS should keep selling and sync later.

  3. Stock per branch. If you have, or plan, more than one branch, you need stock by location and transfers between them.

  4. Variants. Clothing, shoes and phone accessories need sizes and colours, not one product per size.

  5. Barcode scanning and label printing for products without barcodes.

  6. Staff roles and cashier shifts so you can see who sold what and count the drawer.

  7. Payment options your customers use: cash, cards, Apple Pay and, for online orders, buy-now-pay-later such as Tabby and Tamara.

  8. Arabic and English receipts or interface, if your customers or staff need them.

  9. Online selling. If you also sell on Instagram, WhatsApp or a website, check whether the POS shares one stock count with those channels, or whether you'll update stock in two places.

  10. A path to e-invoicing. The UAE is introducing e-invoicing from 2027 (see below). Ask any provider what their plan is.

How much does a POS system cost in the UAE?

Software: from free to about AED 160 a month per location for small-shop plans, and more for larger retail systems. Many charge per location, per register or per user, so a shop with two branches and five staff can pay much more than the headline price.

Hardware: a basic counter setup (touchscreen or tablet, receipt printer, cash drawer, barcode scanner) usually costs from about AED 1,000 used to several thousand dirhams new. An all-in-one Android POS device with a built-in printer is a cheaper option for small counters.

Card payments: card terminals and payment links charge a fee per transaction, set by your bank or payment provider. Ask for the rate in writing.

What must a UAE VAT receipt show?

If your shop is VAT-registered, the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) requires a tax invoice for taxable sales. A full tax invoice includes:

  • The words "Tax Invoice"

  • Your business name, address and TRN (Tax Registration Number)

  • A sequential invoice number and the date

  • Description, quantity and price of the goods

  • The VAT rate and amount in AED, and the total

For sales to customers who aren't VAT-registered, or of AED 10,000 or less, a simplified tax invoice is usually allowed, which can leave out the customer's details. Check the FTA's invoicing guidance for the full rules; your POS should print the right format automatically. To check the VAT on a receipt by hand, use the free UAE VAT calculator.

Does the UAE e-invoicing rule affect my POS?

Yes, from 2027, for business-to-business invoices. Under the UAE's phased e-invoicing rollout, as reported by KPMG and Gulf News in 2026:

Who

Appoint an accredited service provider by

E-invoicing starts

Businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more

The first phase covers invoices to other businesses and government (B2B and B2G). Sales to ordinary shoppers (B2C) are not in scope yet. If your shop sells to other businesses, ask your POS or accounting provider how they'll connect to an accredited e-invoicing service provider. Dates have already moved once, so check the Ministry of Finance and FTA pages for the current timeline.

Best POS systems in the UAE for small shops: compared

We compared six cloud POS systems that UAE retail shops commonly use. Restaurant-focused systems (such as Foodics) aren't included because they're built for cafés and kitchens, not retail.

Nodi: best for shops that also sell in chats and online

Nodi is a cloud POS that shares one product catalog and stock count with your online store and your WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook inbox. Its AI answers customers in English or Arabic and creates orders in the chat, so a WhatsApp order and a counter sale come out of the same stock.

  • Counter: barcode billing, UAE VAT tax invoices, works offline, cashier shifts and cash count, credit sales, barcode labels

  • Stock: variants, stock per branch with transfers, low-stock alerts, purchase orders, Excel/CSV import

  • Selling online: online store in English and Arabic; cards, Apple Pay, Tabby, Tamara and cash on delivery

  • Hardware: runs in the browser; works with receipt printers, barcode scanners and cash drawers

  • Price: from AED 59 a month; Growth includes 3 branches; try the full Scale plan for 30 days for AED 3

Choose something else if: you only sell at the counter and want the cheapest option (look at Loyverse or Zoho's free plan), or you run a restaurant.

Zoho POS: best for shops already on Zoho

Zoho POS has UAE pricing in AED and a free plan for one register and one user. Paid plans are AED 39, 79 and 129 per location per month when billed yearly (AED 49, 99 and 159 monthly), with more registers and users on higher plans. It fits naturally if you already use Zoho Books for accounting.

Watch for: online selling and chat orders need other Zoho apps.

Loyverse: best free POS for a very small shop

Loyverse's core POS is free, with paid add-ons for employee management ($5 per employee per month) and advanced inventory ($25 per store per month). It runs on Android and iPhone and is commonly paired with low-cost Android POS devices.

Watch for: there's no built-in online store or chat selling, and add-ons add up as you grow.

Shopify POS: best if your website is on Shopify

Shopify includes basic in-person selling with every paid plan (from $32 a month on Basic). POS Pro, with staff roles and advanced inventory, is an extra $89 per location per month billed yearly.

Watch for: the total cost once you add POS Pro for each location, and apps for WhatsApp ordering.

Odoo POS: best if you want a full ERP later

Odoo's POS is part of a larger business suite (accounting, inventory, purchasing). One app is free; more apps are charged per user. Many UAE partners set it up, which is useful but adds implementation cost.

Watch for: setup usually needs a partner, and costs grow with users and apps.

Local UAE POS providers

Providers such as XStak, CompuCash and iBOS focus on the UAE market and often offer on-site setup and support. Most quote prices on request.

Watch for: ask about contract length, hardware bundles and what happens to your data if you leave.

How to choose a POS system: 6 questions to ask

  1. Does it print UAE VAT tax invoices with my TRN? Ask for a sample receipt.

  2. What happens when the internet goes down? Test it: switch off Wi-Fi and make a sale.

  3. What's the real monthly price for my number of branches, registers and staff, including VAT?

  4. Which hardware does it support? Check before buying a printer or scanner.

  5. Can I export my data (products, customers, sales) if I leave?

  6. How will it handle e-invoicing for my business customers from 2027?

Most providers offer a free plan or trial. Load ten real products, make a few test sales, print a receipt and close a shift before you decide.

Common mistakes when buying a POS in the UAE

  • Buying hardware first. Choose the software, then buy hardware it supports.

  • Comparing headline prices only. Per-user, per-register and add-on fees often double the cost.

  • Ignoring online stock. If you sell on Instagram or WhatsApp too, two separate stock counts lead to selling items you don't have. See how to sync inventory across Instagram, your website and POS.

  • Not testing receipts. A receipt without "Tax Invoice" and your TRN isn't a valid VAT invoice.

  • Long contracts without a trial. Start month to month until you're sure.

Try Nodi POS

Nodi is a cloud POS for UAE shops that also sell online: VAT invoices, offline billing, stock per branch, and the same stock shared with your online store and an AI that takes orders in WhatsApp and Instagram chats. Plans start from AED 59 a month, and you can try the full Scale plan for 30 days for AED 3.
